Meet the man behind the portal
My name is Rob Campbell; I’m an editor, author and journalist with more than twenty
years of experience in various industries, and I am the Editing Portal.
Shaping written work to reveal and orchestrate its many layers of meaning is something
that comes naturally to me; it's a talent I discovered while doing peer editing in high
school classes and later perfected as a cum laude graduate of UCLA with a BA in
English. In both my academic and personal pursuits, creative non-fiction, literary fiction,
business writing and technical writing were integral parts of my development. While still
at school, I nurtured a sensitive listener's ear and an ability to talk to writers about their
work with keen, balanced criticism when I acted as an editorial assistant to a group of
publishing research psychologists.
After college, I traveled in Asia for several months, then moved to Kyoto, Japan, where I
taught English as a Second Language and landed a prime consultancy contract with the
Osaka Prefectural Government in Western Japan, allowing me to edit or rewrite all
English language public relations materials, reports and correspondence to come out of
that office during the Kansai International Airport's crucial first stages of funding, design
and branding.

When I returned to California, I served as Office Manager for The Actor’s Fund of
America's West Coast office, in which capacity I edited and rewrote all human resources
publications and created many of the local marketing materials. I spent my evenings and
weekends creating innovative publicity campaigns for a number of small, independently
produced theater productions.
In 1995, my life as a freelance journalist began with a series of human interest stories
for the Los Angeles Times, which led to assignments from a variety of publications,
including Buzz, Movieline, Out and Genre. At the same time, I edited manuscripts and
screenplays on a word-of-mouth basis. Like all crafts that take great quantities of
patience, time and exactitude to master, effective editing also demands a good dose of
art and an instinctive bent. Even when my editing career was still in its infancy, my clients
remarked on my uncanny intuition for allowing that art to flow through me into their written
work while also keeping a firm grasp on more technical matters.
A staff position with an alternative weekly in Ventura, CA, galvanized my editing skills and
streamlined my techniques even further. I served as deputy editor for two years,
assigning and editing several pieces each week in every conceivable genre and on any
imaginable topic. Among other parts of my adventures with the written word, I have
authored three books, all published by St. Martin’s Press, 2000-2003: Plato’s Garage, a
collection of literary essays; The Serious Shopping Guide: Los Angeles; and Ecstatic
Trails, a guide to nature walks and day hikes in the Los Angeles area.
Most recently, I have served as the editor of two published books: Angel Park, a novel,
and The Calico Shaman, a non-fiction work by a healer of animals. I have also edited a
dozen or more as-yet unpublished novels, short story collections and non-fiction book
manuscripts that came to me through business and social connections, and I have been
editing screenplays and academic papers solely through client referral for ten years.
Now, I am bringing my services to a wider audience through the Editing Portal.
I invite you to allow me to focus my personal attention on your work and to collaborate
with you on sculpting the finished piece you are visualizing right now. Without
exaggeration, I can say that, for me, editing is a kind of meditation. When I’m tuned in, I
go to “the zone,” the one that top-performing athletes regularly describe: a feeling of
blissful and timeless engagement with the workings of the universe. That’s a state that I
hope for my clients to feel every time they write.
With my best wishes, please explore the Editing Portal and the many invaluable services
I offer at fair, affordable prices.
